Body Weight Influences Risk Of Death Among Asians

A study of more than 1 million Asians found that those who were a normal weight were far less likely to die from any cause than individuals whose body-mass index (BMI) was too high or low. A similar association was seen between BMI and the risk of death from cancer, cardiovascular disease or other causes.

The study, led by Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., Ingram Professor of Cancer Research at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Nashville, Tenn., Paolo Boffetta, M.D., M.P.H., professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, N.Y., and John D. Potter, M.D., Ph.D., member and senior adviser, Public Health Sciences Division, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Wash., was published in this week's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

"Previous studies that evaluated the association between BMI and the risk of death have been conducted primarily in populations of European descent, and the current definition of overweight and obesity is based essentially on criteria derived from those studies," said Zheng, director of the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center. "The validity of these criteria in Asian populations has yet to be determined. A large proportion of Asians are very thin and the impact of a severely low BMI on the risk of death has not been well evaluated until now."

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1 billion adults worldwide are overweight and at least 300 million are obese. Fat tissue has been recognized as an active endocrine organ, capable of releasing a number of biologically active factors that may contribute to obesity-related diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke and several types of cancer.

The research, conducted as part of the Asia Cohort Consortium, included health status and mortality information on more than 1.1 million individuals from East and South Asia. In the cohorts of East Asians, including Chinese, Japanese and Koreans, the lowest risk of death was seen among individuals with a BMI in the range of 22.6 to 27.5, which is considered normal to slightly overweight (BMI is defined as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters).

Chinese, Japanese and Korean populations were much like groups in other parts of the world. These East Asians with a raised BMI of 35.0 or higher had a 50 percent higher risk of death. The same was not true for Indians and Bangladeshis, indicating that a high BMI did not affect all ethnic groups in a similar way.

Being severely underweight was even more dangerous among all of the Asian populations studied. The risk of death was increased by a factor of 2.8 among those whose BMI was very low, that is, 15.0 or less.

"The most unexpected finding was that obesity among sub-continent Indians was not associated with excess mortality," said Potter. "This may be because many obese people in sub-continent India have a higher socioeconomic status and so have better access to health care."

"Our findings capture two different aspects of a rapidly evolving pattern; severe underweight was highly prevalent in Asia in the past, and we can still observe its important impact on mortality," explained Boffetta. "Looking into the future, however, prevention of overweight and obesity deserves the highest priority."

The authors conclude that this study provides strong evidence supporting the biologic plausibility that excess weight contributes to a higher risk of death.

"This confirms that most people are at a higher risk for dying early if they are obese and is a clear message not to gain weight as we age," said Potter.

Nearly 50 researchers from seven countries contributed to this study. Data analysis for the project was conducted by the Asia Cohort Consortium Coordinating Center, which is supported, in part, by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the National Cancer Institute.

Knee Pain From Common Arthritic Condition Eased By Weight Loss

Knee pain related to osteoarthritis (OA) is a common complaint among obese individuals and retired professional athletes, especially former NFL players, but researchers presenting their work at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day program said they have a simple solution: lose weight.

"Our research on patients who were obese with early-onset knee osteoarthritis showed that those individuals who underwent isolated weight loss via bariatric surgery and lost an average of 57 pounds within the first six months significantly improved their knee pain, stiffness and physical function. Quality of life, activities of daily living and sports activity also improved; all of this without other arthritic treatments," said lead researcher Christopher Edwards of the Penn State College of Medicine.

OA of the knee is one of the five leading causes of disability among elderly men and women in the U.S., and costs $185 billion in out-of-pocket expenditures each year. Obesity is one of the leading risk factors for the disease.

The study followed 24 adult patients who ranged in age from 30-67 and were diagnosed as obese with clinical and radiographic evidence of knee OA. The Western Ontario and McMaster (WOMAC) Index of Osteoarthritis and Knee and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) surveys were administered at a pre-bariatric surgery baseline and at six and 12 months post surgery.

"Each individual had some kind of improvement in their pain from losing weight, some more than others. There are few studies that have investigated the role of isolated weight loss in the absence of additional arthritis treatment on those individuals with radiographically confirmed OA. Further research still needs to be performed to investigate whether knee arthritis symptom improvement continues over time and are applicable to those individuals who are simply overweight, but our research suggests a strong possibility of improvement," said Edwards.

Drinking Vegetable Juice May Help Increase Vegetable Intake And Support Weight Management

Studies show drinking V8® 100% vegetable juice may be a simple way for people to increase their vegetable intake and may help them manage their weight - two areas of concern outlined in the newly released 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.1

A study conducted by researchers at the University of California-Davis found that adults who drank one, 8-ounce glass of vegetable juice each day, as part of a calorie-appropriate Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, got nearly twice as many vegetable servings a day than those who did not drink any vegetable juice. Additionally, nine out of 10 participants who drank V8 100% vegetable juice said they felt they were doing something good for themselves.2

Researchers attribute the results to the ease, convenience and enjoyment of vegetable juice as a way to get more vegetables.

"This study suggests that it's not enough to just educate people on the importance of vegetables, you need to show them ways to easily incorporate them into their daily routine," said study co-author Carl Keen, PhD, Professor of Nutrition and Internal Medicine at the University of California-Davis. "What we found was that something as simple as drinking your vegetables can be an effective tool in achieving behavior change."

The new U.S. Dietary Guidelines report also reinforces the need for Americans to achieve and sustain a healthy weight. Current data shows that 64 percent of women and 72 percent of men are overweight or obese.3 Eating more vegetables can be a helpful strategy to manage weight because they are "low-energy-dense," meaning they have more nutrition for fewer calories.

Again, vegetable juice can play a key role. A study from Baylor College of Medicine shows that overweight individuals with metabolic syndrome who drank one to two servings of V8 100% vegetable juice as part of a calorie-appropriate DASH diet lost more weight compared to non-juice drinkers. Over the 12-week study period, the juice drinkers lost an average of four pounds compared to the non-juice drinkers who lost one pound.4 In addition to weight loss, the vegetable juice drinkers had significant increases of vegetable intake, vitamin C and potassium over the course of the study compared to the non-juice drinkers.

"Making vegetable consumption easy is critical because it has so many benefits, from disease prevention to weight management," said John Foreyt, PhD, Director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine. "We have a lot more work to do in finding ways for people to improve their health, but providing them with something simple like vegetable juice is a step in the right direction."

About the Studies

Both studies were randomized controlled trials, each lasting 12 weeks. The University of California-Davis study involved 90 healthy adults, ages 40-65 years. The Baylor College of Medicine study enrolled 81 adults (83.5% of whom were minority) aged 35-65 with metabolic syndrome risk factors. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for heart disease and diabetes that includes excess body fat in the midsection, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and elevated blood cholesterol.

The studies were supported in part by Campbell Soup Company and by resources provided from University of California-Davis and Baylor College of Medicine.

People Warned Over Adulterated Herbal Weight Loss Pill, UK

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is advising people not to use the herbal weight loss product 'Herbal Flos Lonicerae (Herbal Xenicol) Natural Weight Loss Formula' due to concerns over possible side effects.

The product is believed to be widely available over the internet as well as in some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) outlets in the UK.

Anyone currently using this product should stop taking it and consult their healthcare professional immediately.

This issue was bought to the Agency's attention by a concerned GP after one patient was hospitalised and several others reported suffering a range of side effects including palpitations, severe gastritis and abdominal pain, as well as insomnia after taking the capsules.

Herbal Flos Lonicerae (Herbal Xenicol) Natural Weight Loss Formula is believed to contain an undeclared pharmaceutical substance and is currently undergoing laboratory testing.

MHRA Head of Herbal Medicines Policy, Richard Woodfield, said: "Since 2005, the MHRA has found over 280 examples where so-called 'herbal' or 'natural' products have been adulterated with random quantities of powerful pharmaceutical substances. Such products pose a real risk to the public.

"It is situations such as this one that the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) scheme is being introduced and why EU legislation has been changed in order to regulate herbal medicines.

"People have a right to know that what they are putting into their bodies to treat one condition will not directly cause a possibly more severe one simply as a result of very poor practice in parts of the sector.

"The THR scheme will make it possible to give people clear advice on which herbal products are safe to use, and provide an assurance that they were made in adequate conditions, and to the necessary standard."

Our Lady Of Lourdes Medical Center Among First To Offer Single Port Surgery For Weight Loss Surgery Patients

Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and renowned weight loss surgeon Dr. Alex Gandsas have announced the successful completion of a single port sleeve gastrectomy procedure that has resulted in a "scarless" surgery. Lourdes is thought to be the only hospital in New Jersey that has performed the sleeve gastrectomy procedure though the patient's belly button.

"This is a remarkable step toward significantly improving the cosmetic results for patients," says Gandsas, who was assisted during the surgery by Dr. Adeshola Fakulujo. "The belly button is the body's natural scar. By reducing the operative site to one single incision in the belly button, the scar is practically invisible."

A laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, which removes 75 percent of the stomach so that it looks like a sleeve, is traditionally performed through six incisions that range from .5 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. These incisions allow the necessary surgical instruments to be inserted, as well as a special camera to view structures inside the abdomen. But with the single-port surgery, the same equipment is guided through just one incision in the belly button. Minimally invasive procedures are associated with shorter length of stay, less pain and quicker return to normal activity.

"The single-port technique is more technically challenging because of ergonomics," explains Gandsas, who is also the chair of the Department of Surgery at UMDNJ - School of Osteopathic Medicine. "Your instruments are working in one line. But with appropriate patient selection, and an experienced surgeon, outcomes are excellent. What's more, patients appreciate the cosmetic benefit of a virtually scarless procedure. In my experience, patients want fewer incisions with any surgery."

Candidates for the single-port sleeve gastrectomy procedure are those with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 to 45, and those who have an abdominal wall that has less thickness to it so that inserted instruments can move freely.

While the approach to the surgery differs from the traditional laparoscopic method, the sleeve gastrectomy procedure itself is still the same. Because of this, it still has the same benefits and risks for patients.

According to Gandsas, the benefits include the fact that sleeve gastrectomy is relatively successful, with patients losing about 40 to 50 percent of excess weight after three years. It's also a good alternative to standard gastric bypass, which may be too risky for some patients. Sleeve gastrectomy also does not affect the absorption of food, so nutritional deficiencies are not a problem. The drawbacks - sleeve gastrectomy is irreversible, and while rare, there is risk for infection, leaking of the sleeve and blood clots.

"Single port surgery itself is gaining popularity and many see a natural progression," adds Gandsas. "We are moving toward fewer incisions to reduce surgical impact. However, we still need randomized prospective studies looking at comparable outcomes between single-port sleeve gastrectomy and standard laparoscopy. These minimally invasive techniques are as a bridge as we push the envelope and refine our techniques to improve the patient experience."

Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County and Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center are designated Blue Distinction Centers® for Bariatric Surgery by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. HealthGrades, the nation's leading independent healthcare ratings organization, has given Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center a five-star rating for overall bariatric surgery two years in a row, ranked it number three in New Jersey for two consecutive years and awarded it the Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award™ in 2009.

New Book - Startling Truth About Weight Gain, Obesity: It's Not Your Fault

Two-thirds of adult Americans are overweight. In their newest guide to a sane approach for better health, Award Winning health authors Mannie Barling and Ashley Brooks answer the main question for those who have failed in dieting: "Are you addicted to chemical food ingredients.or is the addiction just in your mind?"

Veteran authors, award winning health experts and radio podcast hosts Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks have announced the release of their fourth innovative health guide, It's Not Your Fault, Weight Gain, Obesity and Food Addiction. In this comprehensive work the authors describe the causes of food craving, overeating and food addiction and they reveal the dangerous addictive chemicals used by food manufacturers which cause the compulsive and obsessive eating that leads to today's obesity epidemic.

The leading addiction of the American public -- surpassing even cigarettes and alcohol -- is overeating to the point of obesity. American obesity rates, in fact, are the highest in the world. Nearly twenty percent of the adult population has been diagnosed as clinically obese and there are ten million overweight and obese children in the U.S.

"Americans did not get fat overnight nor did some mosquito spread a deadly virus that causes obesity," write the authors.

Instead, Barling and Brooks convincingly show that weight gain and obesity are the result of an addiction to chemical food ingredients, the dangers of genetically modified fruits and vegetables and the damage caused by the synthetic growth hormones, carcinogens and antibiotics found in factory farmed meats and dairy.

For any reader who has failed to lose or keep off weight despite conscientious juicing, eating salad diets, drinking healthy food shakes or changing diets like a yo-yo, It's Not Your Fault offers hope.

Using just the information provided in this book one author has already been able to lose eighty pounds, the other twenty, and they're still losing weight.

"I'm having great fun already with the book. Fascinating read. And extremely informative. I'm appalled at the extent of my ignorance." - Barbara Paskin, BBC

About the book:
It's Not Your Fault by Emanuel Barling, Jr. & Ashley F. Brooks, R.N.
ISBN: 978-1-4327-6664-1
Publisher: Outskirts Press
Date of publish: Dec 20, 2010
Pages: 228
S.R.P.: $29.95

About the authors:

Emanuel Barling, Jr., is a retired lawyer, an author and a businessman who has survived the ravages of malignant colorectal cancer, Crohn's Disease and IBD. Like so many others, he has also struggled with his weight and the obesity caused by prescription drugs, food allergies and intolerances to the chemicals found in the packaged goods sold in markets, restaurants and fast food chains. He has spent thirteen years researching this book.

Ashley F. Brooks, R.N., is a third generation nurse, an actress and an author who has survived third stage liver, kidney and pancreatic disease caused in part by genetically modified ingredients and the addictive chemicals found in packaged foods. Ms. Brooks has spent a lifetime controlling her weight as an actress and model and has gone from one diet to another and experimented with every conceivable diet food ever manufactured. She has extensive experience in emergency rooms, psychiatric wards and hospice care as well as with nutritional, holistic and environmental medicine. She learned from the founder of environmental medicine, Dr. Theron Randolph and offers all of his insight in weight gain.

I have been a friend of Mannie for almost 40 years, and Asley for 20 years. I personally know what they have gone through before writing these books. Mannie and Ashley have literally saved their own lives by researching the products discussed in their books. If you read the labels of the products yourselves, you too will understand the value of this book. I too have changed my way of eating, but not to the extent that I should.

Fruits & vegetables high in vitamin C like Oranges, lemons, pineapples, grapefruit, apples, limes, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, celery, carrot, and watermelon liquefy (or burn off) body fat so the fat can be easily flushed out of your body and you need to eat RAW fruits & vegetables because...

Farmers feed pigs steamed or cooked veggies to fatten them up because they know raw veggies will slim them down.

2. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is loaded with fiber that decreases your appetite by making you feel full so you can go for long periods of time without eating while keeping your energy levels high at the same time and...

The researchers also found out that the athletes burned more fat while working out and were able to workout longer when eating complex carbs like oatmeal.

3. Dairy products

Dairy products or foods high in calcium like Low-fat yogurt, cheese, & milk breakdown fat cells faster and in a recent study...

My name is Lisa Smedy..
I am 35 yrs old I have recently transformed the way I ate and started going to the gym at least once a week I have noticed that even going once has helped.. I have lost 19 pounds and I have also been walking up our local mall 3 days a week.. I have also done atkins.. My question is, Is eating while your dieting a bad thing especially when your dr. tells you for your bones?

Ian, your article troubles me for one reason. "I don't have time to exercise anytime during your day". I think your biggest problem keeping you from your goal is you. You need to make your health and happiness a #1 priority. Its more important than getting 45 more minutes of homework done, or watching your dog take a crap. Try jogging with your dog, kill two birds with one stone. If you don't have 45 minutes for yourself then there is too much on your plate and you need to ajust your priorities. 45 minutes a day and a good diets is enough to see results, just stick with it for a month and you will be so excited to see your progress in the mirror. The hardest part for people is the results do not come instantly, while junk food is instant satisfaction. Use what bothers you as motivation, think about it till your mad then use that anger in a positive and take it out in excercise. Everytime you stray, remind yourself. I used my bald head as motivation and it works. good luck sir.

Hi Ian,
My name is Leanna. I'm in the same age group as you and I also take most of my classes online. One thing I do is take fish oil supplements which help with focus, thus getting work done faster, and it boosts metabolism, thus speeding up the weight loss. Another thing you could do is get up earlier and do ur workout before u do ur lessons, which will also help u focus more and u can lift weights while reading ur lessons. I tend to do a 2-hour workout before my schoolwork, but obviously that's a bit out-of-the-norm, so u could probably do a 30-minute workout like the bender ball or something. (trust me, that workout is a miracle-worker)
Hope that helps, good luck :)

start off by simply walking, drinking LOTS of water, and instead of cutting any specific foods out, add healthier foods in. eat several times a day, but smaller portions. when we let ourselves go several hours without eating we feel like we are starving and tend to over eat. watch portions, the average american sometimes eats double and triple an actual serving at one time.

niki submitted this comment on December 11, 2010 - 12:47

just eat healthy and run. From doing so i lost 21 pounds in a month. I just eat supper healthy like only veggies, fruits, and grilled chicken and run 2 too 3 miles a day

shelb submitted this comment on December 23, 2010 - 11:58

Hey man, You might not believe me, but exercise is not a good way to lose weight, because we tend to eat more as we work out more. If you want to lose weight eat less, although exercise is great for building a tight firm body that's all the rage, you will never lose the weight if you continue to eat a the same amount, so google "calorie calculator" there are a couple types go to freedieting.com. word of advice find small snacks like hard boiled eggs, string cheese, gogurt, exc (it makes it easier to count).

dont set your goals too high, make sure you set realistic goals for yourself. if you have the energy and motivation you could do a more extensive workout. if you tend to give up on your workout goals try starting out simple like going for a walk. it also depends on your health. if you are a healthy teenager with no weight or health issues join sports at school or go for a jog every day. just make sure you are consistent with you workout. i would also recommend eating more. you need more calories than what you are getting. you should eat several meals a day, just watch the portions. calories are good, if they are the right kind of foods and you are getting plenty of exercise . the biggest mistake that i made when i was younger was starving my body, i was the perfect shape and size, i was actually very pretty. but when i looked in the mirror, i saw a fatso.(5'5 110 lbs hourglass shap, with a cute little butt) lol i did a lot of damage to my body and lost weight using some very unhealthy methods. now i regret putting my body through so much stress. if i would have done it the healthy way and been consistent, I probably wouldnt have ended up becoming overweight when i became pregnant which led to some other issues and so on. Talk to your doctor about losing the weight, if he or she thinks you should lose a few pound then they can advise you on how to go about doing so. God bless

I dont know what it is but I dont think your diet is the cause and you're better off asking a doctor about that

Adrian Bryant submitted this comment on November 27, 2010 - 10:29

good job on the diet changes!!!! i just recently did the same thing due to being diagnosed with pcos, and i feel so much better overall. just an fyi though, the best thing you can do is stick with it and be consistent, dont give it up once you reach you weight goal, it will come back!!!! you should definitely talk to a doc about your stomach pains along with your current diet plan. there are so many different opinions on the internet, who knows if the people you talk to on here really are qualified to give health advice. your doctor or a doctor would be the best person to talk to. God bless, will be praying for you with your stomach pain and health goals.

Sounds like your on the right track, make sure your calories are manageable you should cut off a hundred

aaron submitted this comment on December 01, 2010 - 09:58

awesome job!!!! you should add more fresh fruits and vegetables. i know, i know ya hear it all the time. but it is true. and when possible eat raw fruits and vegetables. white rice, white breads, and pastas are foods to avoid as much as possible. our bodies take a lot longer to break these foods down. you could switch to brown rice which is a little healthier. our rice here in america is fortified. have you ever noticed people from over seas that eat mostly rice in their country and stay small come here eating our rice and put on quite a bit of weight? we also tend to double and sometimes triple serving sizes here in america. eat more ofter 5-6 times a day but small portions. this will keep you from feeling like you are starving which then leads to overeating. calories are good if they are from healthy foods. and making sure you are burning calories and being consistent is very important. sounds like you are doing great with the treadmill. just be consistent, and stick with it! setting realistic goals is very important. if walking 4-5 times a day for 30 min at a time is hard to stick to every day, then cut back and slowly work your way up. i looked up how much you should weigh and depending on your body type, you should weigh anywhere from 123-164 lbs. i think your focus should be on just getting healthy and losing weight the healthy way, i am praying right now for your health and your success with your health goals. God bless!

Hi Rachel! My name is Abby I'm 14 and im 5'8 aswell i weigh 168 and it really upsets me too. I have been doing exercises and a very good diet (i dont starve myself AT ALL) but i do a good diet portion size. I have lost seven ponds in the last month by going for a run once a day with situps, i also drink instant breakfist drinks 1 for breakfist and 1 for lunch with a piece of fruit. This is working well for me! If you want you should try it too! you are not overweight but like myself we both need to get in "better" shape, so we feel and look healthier. I hope i helped, it was nice to know im not the only girl that feels this way!
Thanks,
Abby

hey Rachel, you are not to fat for your age. I am 16 and weigh 190 pounds. I am currently trying to get down to 150. Just keep eating healthy and walking. Some good exercises for your stomach would probably be crunches and the side plank. they help with belly fat and love handles.

BUT NO MAYNOISSE] and in the past two weeks i lost 5 pounds! that is my motivation! GOOD LUCK:D

As a vegitarian your diet may be deficient is complete proteins and fat. Yes you have to eat fat to loose fat. sounds strange but if you starve your body of a particular nutrient it will try to conserve that nutrient. Include some good fats and make sure you are getting complete proteins which is difficult on a vegetarian diet. If you are not a vegan this can be accomplished with eggs and dairy products and fish.

4 things other than water you can drink to lose weight faster

1. Ice cold water

You'll burn an extra 250-to-500 calories a day by drinking 8-to-10 glasses of ice cold water because...

Your body has to burn calories (or fat) in order to heat the ice cold water back up to your body temperature so basically...

You can lose up to 1 lb. a week JUST by drinking ice cold water.

A German study says drinking about 2 extra glasses of water can boost your metabolism by 30% and they figure when you drink about 1.5 liters of water a day you'll lose an extra 5 lbs a year.

2. Jillian Micahels Diuretic Drink - (Lose 5 lbs. in 7 days drinking this)

Press the play button below to see how to lose 5 lbs. in 7 days....

See how Jillian helped Marilyn lose 18 pounds in 4 weeks

3. Fat Free Milk

Milk is high in calcium and calcium can boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells. This doesn't mean you should go out and drink gallons of milk everyday - but adding milk to your diet in moderation can double the rate of fat you lose.

Different studies say different things on milk and weight loss... some say you can lose 30, 50, and one study even said 70% more weight than people who don't include 3-4 servings of dairy (milk) a day.

4. Green Tea

Studies show you can burn 35-43% more fat during the day when you drink 3-to-5 cups of green tea - See How To Make Your Own Green Tea here

5. Vegetable Juice

Drinking a glass of vegetable juice before your meals may cause you to eat 135 less calories according to a study done at Penn. state university and even if you can't make vegetable juice... Drinking a couple glasses of water before meals will also make you eat much less so you lose more weight.

6. Whey protein

Whey protein helps you release appetite suppressing hormones that curb your cravings.

In a recent study... people drank either whey or casein and 90 minutes later they were allowed to eat freely at a buffet table. The people that drank whey protein ate significantly less calories.

7. Yogurt Based Smoothies

Not only will the thickness of the smoothie kill your appetite but since Yogurt is loaded with calcium just like milk...

Researchers at the University of Tennessee found out that you can lose 61% more fat and 81% more belly fat when adding yogurt to your diet because...

The calcium in yogurt helps you burn fat and it also limits the amount of fat your body can make but...

Try to use the healthier Greek Yogurt in your smoothies along with adding some whey protein and fruit to boost your yogurt smoothies weight loss power!

There's other sites you can look up for tips too.
Good luck (:

theres is a chance you can lose weight by a month but you got to work your butt off, exerice and diet is a good way to start off with. Other then that, don't eat junk food or oily food such as pizza alot of meat, if so try to clean the oil off the pizza, it makes it so it dont have as such.

Unknown submitted this comment on November 17, 2010 - 06:49

Yes man :) its possible to lose that weight. If you just excercise, eat the right foods, and dont slack off, you will sure do it. My mom lost 20 pounds in one month! And she goes to work from 7 to 2. Im 13 right now and i weigh 135 pounds and 5'10 1/2. I was about the same size as you when i was 11, so you should be good to go. Little things can help you, if you pack your lunch, try to put veggies and fruits in it instead of potato chips. An average bag of chips is 150 calories, and if you eat that every school day, you have put on an extra 750 calories! Do you play a sport? I play football and basketball, these two sports are great ways to lose some weight. Heck, playing any sport is great to lose weight. On the weekends instead of sitting down on the couch, go take a jog or play outside! Stuff like this can help well :). Now that you know, go out and do it :)

I was in the same situtation a few years back and I stopped drinking all soda drinks and everytime I had a break from work I walked around the building. I lost 40 lbs within the first few months without even really working out. I know everyone is different but worth a try. Another thing you could try is before you get out of bed do a few situps/crunches to jump start your metabolism in the morning. good luck!

rachel dee submitted this comment on December 06, 2010 - 11:22

Hey,

FIRST - it is NEVER too late to loose weight. One good thing about the body it CAN be changed and worked on REGARDLESS of your age.

It takes dicipline and a good routine that suites YOU and only YOU.

snack on good things - like fruit or low in oli nuts. One thing about me is i get bard easily with the everyday fruit so i like to mix it up and adventure on new fruits; especially as the seasons change the different types of fruits tend to change as well.

exercise - i hardly have time for the gym so i bought a skipping rope and try and do this every morning and evening. You will definitely feel it but its good for the entire body.

When i get upset i like to dance (in the confinement of my room alone) but that's my way of getting over it and moving on... but you have to find what works for you and its NOT comfort eating.#

Also you have to know that you didnt put on 11stones at once neither will you loose 11 stones in a day - IT TAKES TIME!

Enjoy your life, like seriously being happy with SELF is a huge impact when loosing weight. When you have achieved something reward yourself - what do you like and get it for yourself!

Hope that helped
x

how many calories are you eating in total?

YES - you mayhave to do something else outside of your normal daily routine to be considered a workout because anything you do for a long time you & your body will get used to

i eat about 800 calories or less typically. im usually sorta hungry. on the weekend i often forget to eat. and during the week im always working so i dot have much time to eat. what sort of exercises should i do at home to get rid of these fatty love handles i hate?

maryrose submitted this comment on October 15, 2010 - 02:45

well if you really want a smaller healthier body you would make yourself give up junk food, you cant get anywhere unless you have the mind set of I CAN DO THIS, if you drink water the 8 cups a day or even 4 or 5 it would help your stomach alittle flatter because water has no calories so its naturally good for you, to lose weight properly change all your fried foods to grill or baked, only eat chicken,or fish or any meat EXCEPT BEEF because tend to bloat you up and it takes a longer time to digest and you really dont want that, when i lost my weight i didnt even drink much water or even excerise foreal i walk at the beach and bike ride which are two things that will tone your legs up and lunges if you do this for a week or two i promise you youll lose weight but its starts with you if you think your not going to lose weight then your not just remember that hopefully i was a great help to u good luck:)

khalia submitted this comment on October 06, 2010 - 07:24

congats on being a mom. you can eat cheap and not eat as bad as you think. you just need to know about what the worst choices are and what are the least bad choices. watch out for hygrogenated oils, hydrolized proteins, and mono sodium glutimate. there are others to look for, but those are the big three. good luck with your diet and the baby. also try walking a mile a day and drink more water.

jonathan submitted this comment on October 11, 2010 - 12:16

You are fortunate to be a guy because guys naturally have a faster metabolism than girls do. If you are really serious about losing weight, you have to change your life style. Gradually cut out fatty foods from your diet and work out in the gym. Replace soda with water and fruit juice and drink water before a meal, it fills up your stomach so you eat less. Good luck

hi maria!!! 120 pounds might not look good on you. the best thing to do when u want to lose weight is to set mini goals, like ill lose 10 pounds this month ect... first thing you should do is start replacing all those chips and cookies with healthy stuff like fruit and veggies, low fat cottage cheese with some tomato on the top is a yummy and great lunch idea, and yes you def have to get up and start moving around girl!!! start slow with maybe half hour walks (at a good rate) outside for a week and then kick it up 15 mins the next week, so on.
remember standing is better then sitting and walking or moving around is better then standing,

jasica submitted this comment on September 28, 2010 - 04:38

Hi Maria well the first step is wanting to loose the weight and you do..So you need nice healthy snacks put aside for when you feel you really need one in small baggies so u can just grab one and munch like Cheerios in a baggie 1cup /almonds 1/2 cup/stuff like that and just start by stretching every night while watching T.V or listening to radio.for 45 min and take a 1/2 hour walk fast paced every day and when you eat a meal eat only 1/2 of what you would at a sitting. I wish u the best so go on and get started I believe you are going to do Fab....best wishes Andrea

Andrea submitted this comment on October 05, 2010 - 02:15

Not really...

for the last 10 pounds you just need to workout smarter to get off those last 10 but any fat burner that has caffiene/ green tea in will help you with energy to burn more fat while working out

Adrian Bryant submitted this comment on September 10, 2010 - 06:02

#1 - how many total calories are you eating a day? - that's the main question

#2 - with only 3 times a week to workout - you need to do something more intense in a short period of time like one of these home workouts

Adrian Bryant submitted this comment on September 09, 2010 - 11:27

i really dont think thats possible in 4 months not realistically, dont focus on the huge goal make mini goals, like 10 lbs a month. you need to eat 1500 cals a day and workout for at least 45 mins 5 days a week. keep going girl dont give up

jasica submitted this comment on September 28, 2010 - 04:43

Laura:

If I showed you a chart that says your face is ugly, would you believe it? Worry about it if one day you find that you gave up water polo for video games, gain 300 pounds, and think a daily shower is a waste of your time.

I'm sure you look beautiful and have no need to worry about anything.
